What Is a 3-Side Seal Bag?

A 3-side seal bag is a flat format sealed on three edges with one open end for filling. It is the most common flexible packaging format due to its low cost and high production speed.

A stand-up zipper pouch (also called DOYPACK or SUP) has a bottom gusset that allows it to stand upright on a shelf, plus a resealable zipper. It is the premium flexible packaging format used in food retail, pet care, and nutraceuticals.

  • Materials: Multi-layer laminates (PET/AL/PE, OPP/PE, kraft paper/PE)

The cost question is not just price per bag

A comparison that stops at material cost per bag usually points the wrong way. Three costs move together when you change format: the laminate itself, the line rate, and the filling equipment downstream. A stand-up pouch uses more material per unit of contents than a flat bag of the same capacity, because the bottom gusset and the zipper track are both non-contents area. It also runs slower, so the same output needs more machine hours. What offsets that is not the packaging at all — it is the price the finished product carries on a retail shelf. If the product is sold by the tonne to an industrial buyer, no amount of shelf presence recovers that spend, which is why bulk formats stay flat.

Which Format Should You Choose?

If your primary customer is an industrial buyer purchasing in bulk — construction, agriculture, chemicals — the 3-side seal or PP woven bag format is typically the right choice: fast throughput, low cost per bag, and simple filling.

If you are targeting retail shelves or e-commerce where product visibility and resealability matter, the stand-up zipper pouch justifies its higher cost through better consumer experience and shelf differentiation. Many converters operate both lines to serve different customer segments.

What converters usually forget to check

Two practical constraints decide more of these projects than the format debate does. The first is the filling line: a stand-up pouch has to be opened, held square, filled and re-closed, and an auger or gravity filler set up for open-mouth flat bags will not do that without change parts. The second is secondary packaging and transport — flat bags stack densely and stand-up pouches do not, so a switch that looks neutral at the bag level can change case count, pallet pattern and freight cost per unit of product shipped. Both are worth checking before the machine decision, not after.
